On the vertical velocity blipmaps,
colors and colored cross-hatching are for the strength of the up/down motion,
Wind barbs represent the horizontal wind (kts). Areas of black crosshatches
are areas of high humidity where there will almost certainly be clouds.
The mechanical upward winds amplify thermals. The effect is not just additive. Also, the colors represent average upward velocity over a grid square, so locally the upward mechanical lift might be much stronger than that represented by the color. Green and Pink can be quite good. Glass-off is usually brown. The edges of convergence zones can be very turbulent.
